Rokid Station: The First Android TV Box for AR Glasses

by Abdul Hadi

Introduction

The Android TV box is becoming more and more popular as streaming services proliferate and more consumers cancel their traditional cable television subscriptions. But up until this point, Android TV boxes were only available as indoor, TV-connected gadgets. Rokid, a Chinese IT startup with headquarters in Hangzhou, has created the first Android TV box for augmented reality. Given that Rokid also produces the Rokid Max, one of the top consumer-grade AR glasses on the market, it makes sense for the firm to include it in its portfolio.

What are Android TV boxes and AR glasses? A quick summary.

For those who might not be familiar with Android TV boxes or AR glasses, here is a brief description. Android TV boxes are just extremely basic computers with a CPU, internal storage, memory, and access to streaming video apps like YouTube, Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc. They run Google’s Android TV software.

The consumer-grade AR glasses are essentially just wearable screens in the form of sunglasses. A pair of micro-OLED panels on the Rokid Max project a single vision that is almost similar to a 215-inch screen placed 10 feet away from the user. The screen seems substantial enough to fill your full field of view, but not so big that you have to turn your head to look at it.

Explanation

The Station, a new offering from Rokid, is an Android TV box that can be carried about easily. It has buttons for content control and resembles both a traditional TV remote and a Nintendo Wii controller. The circular direction pad, which makes me think of the iPad click wheel from the middle of the 2000s, is my favorite feature.

The Rokid Station is quite easy to use. It features an independent battery and a micro-HDMi display out connector, so all you need to do to access Android TV is turn it on and attach a cable to the Rokid Max (or any other preferred pair of AR glasses, or even an external display). The Rokid Station will then be able to play any films from any app that is accessible on Google Play Store, including Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, and of course, Google’s own YouTube. From there, you require an internet connection (whether it be WiFi or your phone’s mobile data).

Explanation

The controls make navigating the UI simple, but if you purchase a second Android TV remote, you can also use voice commands to activate Google Assistant. Although I would want the Rokid Station to be able to recognize voice commands on its own, using the controllers to navigate the menu and enter text is absolutely enough.

The Rokid Max’s graphics are fantastic, and I appreciate that you can choose to either project the images onto the “real world” (thus why they are referred to as AR glasses) or to see the movie on a background that is black. Since I lacked the necessary equipment to professionally capture Max’s images, the image below was taken using a camera mounted behind the lens. I noticed that the video was clearer and had more vibrant colors. Due to the fact that I was wearing glasses without lens covers, you can see the brick wall behind the images. I get the impression that a huge screen is hovering in front of my face in the dark if I put on the lens cover.

Explanation of Android TV box for AR glasses

The Rokid Station’s use case should be obvious: as long as they have a Rokid Max and an internet connection, they can view streaming video from any location. The Rokid Station can play local video files even without an internet connection. It is easy to carry because it is lighter and smaller than a phone. The see-through feature of the glasses allows me to view videos while remaining aware of my surroundings. I’ve been using the Rokid Station to play YouTube videos to my Rokid Max while I roam around the home.

Since Android is the operating system of the Rokid Station, you may install non-video apps like Spotify and use it to stream music or use Chromecast to reflect the display of your phone. This makes it possible for devices without display output, such as the Google Pixel Fold, to broadcast to the Rokid Max.

The Rokid Station does an excellent job for what it is. The pre-order pricing on Rokid’s website is $129; after it launches, the retail price will be $139. While the Rokid Max AR glasses were previously $439, they are now available in a bundle deal for $529.
