Current Information: Day 514 of Russia’s “Special Operation” in Ukraine

by Abdul Hadi

In February 2022, after Kiev’s pro-Western administration ignored Moscow’s pleas for its neighbour to retain its neutrality, Russia, concerned about NATO’s eastward expansion, launched a military operation in Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev are attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the dispute in the midst of the chaos. Here is where to stay up to date on the crisis between Russia and Ukraine:

Ukraine claims that the counteroffensive has started more slowly than anticipated.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenky, the counteroffensive is moving more slowly than intended because it began later than anticipated.

Zelensky said via video on Friday at the Aspen Security Forum: “We did have plans to launch it in the spring, but we didn’t, because frankly, we had not enough munitions and weaponry and not enough fully prepared brigades — I mean, really trained in these weapons.

It might be stated that because we started a little later, it gave Russia the opportunity to mine all of our territory and construct many lines of defence, which is the truth, according to all specialists.

They created all of those lines since they had more time than they actually required. They had a lot of mines on our farms, in fact. As a result, our counteroffensive activities are moving at a slower rate,” Zelensky said.

Despite its challenges, the Ukrainian president claimed that his nation was making progress.

“We didn’t want to lose our people, our personnel and our servicemen, we didn’t want to lose equipment, and because of that, they were quite careful about the offensive actions,” he continued, adding, “I would say that we are approaching a moment when relevant actions can gain pace because we are already going through some mine locations and demining these areas.

The US will send Ukraine another $400 million in military aid

According to three Joe Biden administration officials quoted by Reuters on Friday, the United States intends to unveil a new package of military support for Ukraine worth up to $400 million as soon as early next week.

According to the source, the latest package would comprise ground vehicles, air defence missiles, and artillery rounds for Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive.

The Biden administration is preparing to send several Stryker armoured personnel carriers, mine-clearing tools, ammunition for Patriot and Stinger anti-aircraft systems, ammunition for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), anti-tank weapons, and more, according to the report.

At the same time, the article claims that cluster munitions will not be a part of the new assistance programme.

The US Defence Department earlier this week unveiled a new $1.3 billion security assistance programme that for the first time includes 155mm cluster artillery rounds.
